Yesterday, in the packed hall of the Zavičajni Museum Benkovac, we had the privilege to attend an inspirational and profoundly moving lecture on the book "Lepuri kod Benkovca" (engl. Lepuri near the town of Benkovac) by Prof. Ivan Josipović.
The book delves into the history of a small church of St. Martin, located in the Roman Catholic cemetery of the village of Lepuri. This church has witnessed many rises and falls from the 5th to the 20th century AD serving as a crucial witness to past times, places, people, and rulers. During the Homeland War in Croatia, the church was completely destroyed, leading to the discovery of its early Christian foundations dating back to the 5th century AD. This discovery makes St. Martin one of the most historically significant early Christian churches in Croatia.
Numerous researchers have written about this church, highlighting its importance in uncovering the history and life of the people in our region through the centuries. Now, this story is gaining renewed attention and beginning a new chapter among us.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to the Croatian professors who have contributed to this significant endeavor. We look forward to further discoveries and insights in the future!
Stay tuned for more updates and join us in celebrating our rich historical heritage! 🌺🍀
